Discord GIFs After the Tenor Shutdown: What Changed and What To Do
Discord's GIF picker ran on Tenor for years. After the June 30, 2026 shutdown it mixes GIPHY and Klipy. What changed, what you lost, what works.
If your Discord GIF picker feels different lately, that is not your imagination. The picker that ran on Tenor for almost a decade is gone, and what replaced it is a mix of two providers with very different personalities.
What Discord actually switched to
The news leaked in January, way before the deadline. @DiscordPreviews, January 18, 2026: "Discord is moving their default GIF Search Provider from Tenor to Giphy and Klipy. This is due to the Tenor API shutting down in June of this year."
That is the current state: the picker blends GIPHY and Klipy results, and after June 30 the Tenor tab is simply gone. 9to5Google confirmed users now see separate "Search GIPHY" and "Search Klipy" options in the bar.
The GIPHY half: smaller library, stricter vibes
The r/discordapp thread "My GIF search swapped to giphy and it's... not good" is the best post-mortem you will read:
"I know Tenor is revoking their API but dear GOD, Giphy is AWFUL. I really hope discord can find a different avenue because this just...ain't it man. If I search up anything that's not like animal related it's four gifs and none of them relate to the search."
- u/zapmouse in r/discordapp
"Yea.. people don't realize how terrible and bad this change is for discord... It's like replacing all custom emotes with the stock Facebook ones.. This is really really bad."
- u/AmbitionStunning2392 in r/discordapp
There is also a very specific recurring villain: GIPHY search drowns niche queries in one creator's output (the "Benjammins" meme-verse), because Tenor's long-tail community uploaders mostly have not rebuilt their libraries on GIPHY. GIPHY also requires a creator account application before uploads appear in search, where Tenor indexed almost anything.
The Klipy half: Tenor's ghost
The interesting part of the migration thread: the co-founder of Klipy showed up in the comments.
"Hey folks - I'm the co-founder of klipy.com our company is led by Ex-Tenor/Google team - founders, content team, developers etc. We're replacing Tenor in most biggest apps and are excited to potentially enable you to use our GIFs as well."
- u/viceplayer28 in r/discordapp
That is why the community reaction to Klipy is so different from GIPHY. u/Prudent_Damage_3866: "i hope discord uses Klipy, it's like Tenor 2". Same founders, similar library, familiar search feel. My read: Discord hedged with two providers and let users vote with the search bar. In every thread I read, Klipy is winning that vote.
Your favorites: what survived and what did not
Good news, mostly. As u/playercircuit explained: "favorites are just a link to the gifs on tenor (or whatever you saved from), which aren't being removed." Tenor's servers still host the files, so old favorites keep loading. What died is Tenor search, so finding new ones that way is over.
And the quiet pro move from that thread, u/sauli_01: "you can even post a gif from your own files, then favorite it and it will exist cross-device in your favorites tab." Upload your own file, favorite it, it syncs everywhere. That trick survives every future API apocalypse.
The honest workaround list
1. The private server trick. Private server, dump your favorite GIFs in a channel, favorite them (see above). 2. Klipy's migration tool. klipy.com/migrate converts a Tenor profile to Klipy. 3. Download and own them. Tenor.com still works, save the actual files. 4. Make your own. The 8gifs composer turns any screenshot, URL or clip into a pixel-perfect looping GIF, archived on the wall under your account.
