What GIF API Does Discord Use? (And X, Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram)

Discord moved from Tenor to Klipy and GIPHY after the June 2026 shutdown. How the picker works now and what it means for your server.

What GIF API Does Discord Use? (And X, Telegram, WhatsApp, Instagram)

Short answer: since the Tenor API shut down on June 30, 2026, Discord uses a GIPHY and Klipy mix in its GIF picker, with Klipy as the default for most searches. The longer answer is more interesting, because every big app had to solve the same problem at once and they all chose differently. Here is the full 2026 map, app by app, with sources.

The map: which app uses what

The pattern nobody planned

Count them: seven of nine major apps now run on GIPHY. That was nobody's stated goal in January 2026, but when a free default disappears, apps default to the biggest paid option they already have contracts with, and that is Meta's GIPHY. The shutdown did not just kill an API, it handed Meta the entire third-party GIF market in one afternoon.

The exceptions are the interesting part. WhatsApp choosing Klipy, its own owner's competitor, suggests GIPHY's production-key pricing is aggressive enough that even Meta's other apps balk. And Klipy itself is run by Tenor's original founders, so the second-choice provider is effectively Tenor's ghost. More on that in our Tenor alternatives comparison.

Users noticed within hours

Every switch produced the same first-day thread on Reddit. From r/Telegram after the GIPHY swap:

"Ah thats why every gif is arab or chinese now... its pretty much useless now."u/r0ndr4s

And the universal X experience, September 2026:

"how it feels to search for a gif on twitter after the tenor api shut down"@alt_effore

Discord's own preview announcement thread became the de facto complaint desk, with the same verdict repeating: saved favorites mostly survived (they are stored as direct links), but search quality dropped, and everyone's "frequently used" row reset to zero. Our Discord-specific breakdown covers what you lost and the workarounds.

Jameskii's video on Discord's post-switch GIF picker is a good tour of what the new library actually serves up. The top comment, "Google's graveyard grows" (@VirtualKota), is about as concise a verdict as you will find.

My take

What strikes me going through all of this: every app made a rational choice, and the sum of all those rational choices is a worse internet with one company in the middle. Nobody decided "GIPHY should own GIFs in seven of nine major apps." Platform risk did. The community's answer, visible in every thread, was to stop depending on pickers entirely: back up your favorites, upload your own files, and increasingly, make GIFs yourself instead of searching for them.

If that last instinct sounds familiar, that is literally our product: 8gifs turns a screenshot, URL or tweet into a looping pixel-art GIF in seconds, and everything you make is yours. Here is why owning your GIFs beats renting a picker.
