Build Your Own GIF Library: Stop Depending on GIF APIs
The Tenor shutdown deleted saved GIF collections overnight. How the people who own their libraries got through it fine, and the tools to build yours.
The Tenor shutdown was a stress test, and everyone failed it except the people who owned their GIFs. This post is about them, and about joining them before the next API dies, because there is always a next one.
What actually got destroyed on June 30
Not the GIFs. Tenor.com still works and Google's own apps still serve them. What died was your relationship to the GIFs: favorites stored as Tenor IDs, saved collections tied to an API that stopped existing, search history that no longer resolves. The r/memes reaction thread nailed the scale of it:
"This feels like the burning of the library of Alexandria... Google is killing that themselves."
- u/Unlikely-Complex3737 in r/memes
"Dumb, I used gifs because they were available on the service I'm using. Who is going to browse to a site for a specific use on the internet in its current form?"
- u/bramblebitch in r/memes
That second quote is the whole business case for GIF APIs in one sentence. Convenience was the product. When the convenience died, so did the usage.
The people who saw it coming
My favorite comment from the entire shutdown, posted before the deadline in r/discordapp:
"Tenor gifs get deleted all the time that I used to use so this is no surprise to me, I started saving the gifs I actually use, uploading them to a personal server, then favoriting them so I can use them forever."
- u/SpacedAndBaked in r/discordapp
Notice what that person did: not a big engineering project, just a private server and a habit. Meanwhile u/TheJonThomas asked the strategic question: "Google is about to kill yet another useful web service... what will you do if you get as big as tenor and run into the same issues?" Same logic, bigger stakes.
Self-hosted tools that exist right now
You do not need to build from scratch. These are real, current projects:
- Gifable - self-hosted GIF library with search and S3-compatible storage. The closest thing to running your own Tenor.
- Gifrap - meme database with a Slack bot, converts GIFs to video formats to save space.
- Meme Search - self-hosted meme search engine, Docker up in an afternoon.
- Gifbox by Stoat - community API built to be Tenor-compatible, swap the URL and old pickers keep working.
My tiered recommendation
Low effort: the Discord private-server favorites trick. A private server plus favoriting your own uploads keeps them in sync across devices forever. Medium: Gifable on a cheap VPS, your GIFs with a search bar, nobody's ToS involved. High: create more than you collect. Every GIF you make yourself is a GIF no shutdown can touch. That is the idea behind the 8gifs composer: screenshot, URL or clip in, looping pixel-perfect GIF out, archived on the wall under your name.
If you arrived here from the shutdown news: what happened, what to migrate to, and the full timeline.
