When Did the Tenor API Shut Down? The Dates, the Timeline, and What Broke
The Tenor API died June 30, 2026, but the sequence started in 2018. Every dated milestone of the GIF API shutdown, with sources.
The short answer: June 30, 2026. The useful answer is the whole sequence, because Google did not kill Tenor in a day, it strangled it over six months in plain sight.
Every date that mattered
March 27, 2018. Google acquires Tenor. The API keeps running, free for everyone, and becomes the default GIF engine for half the internet.
2021. Tenor ships API v2, the version everyone still used at the end.
January 13, 2026. The announcement. Google's support page sets the end date and freezes new API keys the same day. Ars Technica covers it as "Google kills Tenor GIF API, forcing changes at X, Discord, and more."
January 14-19, 2026. The smart platforms move immediately. Discord starts testing GIPHY and Klipy in the picker (spotted by @DiscordPreviews). WhatsApp announces its move days later.
June 20, 2026. X completes its migration to GIPHY, ten days before the deadline.
June 30, 2026. The API dies. Third-party requests start returning errors.
July 2026. Everyone else notices. The "why are my Discord GIFs broken" videos and gray-box screenshots flood in.
How it felt on the last day
The r/tenor thread titled "It's Joever" caught the moment better than any news article:
"I try to search for a gif I made to use in chat... and it wasn't there. I then realized what today is... it's the end of the month... the end of tenor api."
- u/Responsible_Try_8519 in r/tenor
A month later the tone shifted from panic to something worse: resignation. @DonaldJProud in September: "Google pulled the tenor API, so outside platforms can't use the gif library. It's gotten better than it was the first week or so, but I do miss the old Tenor Api."
Six months of notice: was that enough?
My take: six months sounds generous until you remember what a GIF integration actually is. It is not one endpoint, it is search, trending, categories, saved-GIF mapping, moderation quirks and a decade of user favorites pointed at Tenor IDs. Hacker News put the deadline problem best: "What's wild is they give you 3 months to rip out and replace something that might be a core feature" (Aditya_kachhawa). The smaller apps that quietly ran on the free API mostly did not make it. As u/Sufficient-Cup4705 put it in r/Android: "classic acquire-then-wall-off move. Smaller apps that quietly relied on the free api are probably just gone now."

And the long-term answer, the one that survives the next shutdown too: own your GIF library, or make GIFs yourself and put them on the wall.
