Tenor API Alternatives: GIPHY, Klipy and Every Option Compared
GIPHY went paid, Klipy is ex-Tenor, Gfycat is dead. An honest 2026 comparison of GIF API options after the Tenor shutdown, with developer opinions.
You had Tenor wired up. Now you do not. Here is what the 2026 field actually looks like, because the comparison sites still ranking "Gfycat vs Tenor" are not helping you.
GIPHY: the biggest, and no longer free
The headline change most articles missed: GIPHY went paid for production use in March 2025. Free "beta" keys still exist but cap you at 100 calls per hour. Real production access means an application and custom pricing. And Meta doubled down: GIPHY extended its Meta integration partnership in May 2026, so it is not going anywhere. The weak spot is search quality, per the people who used both daily (below).
Klipy: built by the people who built Tenor
Klipy is the ex-Tenor founders' answer to the shutdown. The credentials: original Tenor leadership, a $3.8M seed led by Google's own AI Futures Fund in June 2026, and claimed integrations with 18,000+ apps including BeReal, Canva and Figma. The API was built as a drop-in Tenor replacement: change the base URL and key, keep your app.
The business model is the controversy. Klipy monetizes by running ads inside GIF search on some integrations, then told the community: "KLIPY does not force partner app to run ads in GIF search. Ads depend on the integration setup and partner choices" (u/iambatman28, Klipy team). Developers are skeptical about pricing at scale. One in that thread: "Is there a way to evaluate if my usage isn't 'small' and how much would you quote? I guess you'll give the quote when I request the production key - but at that time I should already fully migrate." (u/nallexn)
The rest of the field
Gfycat: dead, redirects to Snapchat. Imgur's API: possible, not GIF-search-shaped. Self-hosting: real and underrated, covered in the self-hosting guide. Useful open-source glue: gif-picker-react (multi-provider picker component) and awesome-gif (curated list).
The comparison, no marketing
| Option | Cost reality | Search quality | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| GIPHY | Paid production, 100/hr free beta | Big library, weaker long-tail | Approval process, Meta-owned |
| Klipy | Free tier, revenue-share ads | Feels like Tenor (same team) | Pricing opaque at scale, ads by default on some tiers |
| Self-hosted | Your infra, ~free | Whatever you upload | You are the moderation team |
What the developers actually said
Hacker News on the migration window: "What's wild is they give you 3 months to rip out and replace something that might be a core feature" (Aditya_kachhawa). The r/webdev sentiment matched, u/Ugikie summing up the quality gap: "tenor is 1000000% better than giphy. The search is just way more accurate... This is really a shame." (thread)
My actual recommendation
Small app, want it working today: Klipy, the base-URL swap is genuinely that easy and the search feels right. Serious product with a budget: GIPHY, pay for the library and the moderation. Community tool or bot where GIFs are the point: self-host, because the next shutdown is a matter of when, not if. Or skip the library debate entirely and make the GIF yourself in seconds. Everything made with the 8gifs composer lands on the wall.
